About Sian Reid

Sian Reid teaches management at the Open University, helping students from all
backgrounds. She believes tuition should be free for all first degrees. She is
an experienced school governor at nursery, primary and secondary level, used to
be a secondary school teacher and has been a Young Enterprise mentor at Hills
Road Sixth Form College.
Sian has been a telephone helpline volunteer for SANE, listening to the mentally ill and their carers. She was a founding trustee of the Cambridgeshire Community Foundation. In the seven years since it was set up, the Foundation has given more than £3m to over 1,100 projects in Cambridgeshire. Sian is a determined campaigner for Close the Door, for reducing street clutter, for improving design standards and for using cotton bags in local shops.
Sian started and managed telecomms businesses across Europe after obtaining
an MBA from the London Business School. She understands the needs of Cambridge's
knowledge businesses and the importance of research funding for a thriving
university city.
She was elected to Cambridge City Council as a Liberal Democrat in 2002, representing the Newnham ward, within which she lives. She is currently Executive Councillor with responsibility for Climate Change and Growth.
Sian led the development and promotion of the City Council's Climate Change Charter. This action plan for carbon reduction has been signed up to by numerous public and private organisations in Cambridge. She has also driven a programme to reduce the City Council's own carbon footprint, for example by introducing LED lighting into the City Council's multi-storey car parks.
With her three children now grown up, she is in a position to cope with the demands of an MP's life.
